I'd have really liked to see Roosevelt Nix at the combine.

We're still trying to force the "Clowney doesn't care about football" narrative?

No, but I've seen every down he's ever played, and I know the ESPN-led narrative of Clowney taking the year off is utter BS.

It's not like Clowney was a better player in 2013 than he was in 2012.

Clowney is the only DL prospect I've ever heard say he was concerned about suffering a serious injury prior to entering the NFL.

You can call it however you want, but I saw a guy who wasn't really going all out for 4 quarters.

Yes the SEC is tough, but it's not like he was playing in the NFC/AFC. For a guy with Clowney's tools to only get 3 sacks on the year is...odd.

I bet you every team that interviews Clowney at the combine will want to know how important the game of football is to him, besides the paycheck.

Of course Clowney wasn't better in 2013 than in 2012. At the same time, you can argue that he was so good in 2012 that it'd be extremely difficult to top that performance. Regarding him saying he was concerned about injury, I must have missed that, I have only seen speculation to the fact from draftniks.

This whole "Clowney is lazy/playing not to get hurt" charade started against North Carolina. Yet when you go back and watch his tape versus North Carolina, it's not remotely as ESPN portrayed it;

Clowney may not have been playing with JJ Watt intensity on every down that game, but the effort issues are obviously extremely overblown. Some have tried to argue that he spent a lot of time on the sidelines, but there are a number of caveats to that. Firstly, Clowney was playing with a stomach virus in extremely hot weather. Secondly, South Carolina rotates heavily on the defensive line and Clowney didn't spend much more time on the sideline that game than he did in 2011 or 2012 when everyone was enamored with him.

Nonetheless, saying Clowney wasn't trying was the easiest way to "analyze" his performance and atone for the lack of expected stats, and that's what ESPN ran with, and what many draftniks started repeating.

Regarding his sack number, obviously three sacks is far from ideal, but it can't be ignored that teams were changing their gameplans just to deal with him. For example, teams like Georgia adopted a passing game relying almost exclusively on quick, three-steps drops, while other teams like Missouri just completely avoided him. Against pretty much every opponent, he was constantly double teamed. Yet while teams limited Clowney in the pass game, he did still manage to be the run stopper on the team when teams decided not to avoid him.

I'm not going to ever say that Clowney is going to be the hardest worker on the team, but at the same time, effort is not an issue.

Three sacks for the season is pathetic, though. Just saying.

Many prospects take it easy in their draft year trying to avoid getting hurt, it is actually a very common practice. After all, we are talking about millions of dollars. However, that being said, it doesn't mean you won't be a great pro, but it definitely raises a red flag that you are going to be asked about during the interview process and you are going to have to come up with a reasonable answer.

But let's not kid ourselves, Clowney definitely took that route this past season and likely most teams have a red flag beside his name, but if he shows in the interview process that he isn't going to take plays off as a pro, then they will remove the red flag and he'll get all his millions.

Clowney just annoys me as a prospect(his effort), but he's the type of talent where if you just brought him into games as a pass rush specialist on 3rd downs he could still tally double digit sacks in the NFL.

Clowney's struggles are grossly exaggerated. Can't remember a college player who received more double and triple teams. Houston has to decide if they'd rather build to become one of the two or three best defensive teams in the league or if they'd rather secure their franchise QB. Don't know who will be there at the top of the 2nd. After Manziel and Bridgewater, I don't see a guy I'd feel confident about drafting as a franchise QB. Broyles has the potential to go either way, and Mettenberger needs the right system.

I have not made any assumptions about Clowney. However, you can't avoid the fact that his production took a nosedive, and that needs to be explained. The interviews at the Combine provide a good opportunity to do so.

Khalil Mack.

A poor combine brings into doubt all of his tape against lower competition.

Niklas is a really good player to mention. He's not as well known as the top 3 TEs and he could seriously raise his stock if he shows the athleticism to project as a good receiving prospect at the position. We already know he can block well and he's huge.

He looks like a really fluid, capable receiver to me. Good body control, good movement on the field, catches the ball away from his body, tracks it pretty well in the air. Reminds me a litt of Zach Miller, actually, but I think he's a better athlete. Neither was a balzer, but Zach Miller is really probably like a 5.00 40 guy right now, and I would be surprised if Niklas is any slower than in the 4.7s.

I believe that juniors and small college prospects gain/lose the most at the combine, the seniors have been scouted to death with every rock turned over but the NFL scouting community doesn't spend a great deal of time on juniors till they declare and small college prospects have never really been tested on a consistent basis against solid competition. These groups get a lot of scrutiny at the Combine.

IMO, every prospect has a lot to prove at the Combine concerning their physical ability. If you take a WR for example, it is one thing to beat college CB's who run in the 4.6's/4.7's and will never see pro football and quite another to beat pro type CB's at the Combine where the playing field is evened out. This goes for every position. It's a huge jump to pro ball and this is really the first time as I mentioned before, that the playing field is filled with pro type players who can physically challenge every prospect.

I'm excited, bring it on already.

Chris Borland needs to display all-around athleticism. If he does well, then people have to accept that his size won't really limit him because his film obviously is a plus.

Don't know who will be there at the top of the 2nd. After Manziel and Bridgewater, I don't see a guy I'd feel confident about drafting as a franchise QB. Broyles has the potential to go either way, and Mettenberger needs the right system.
This bothers me, Clowney will face double and triple teams in the NFL just like every top NFL DE does, they still put up a heck of a lot more sacks than 3. When a prospect takes plays off, he is going to get a red flag beside his name and there will always be some doubt as to his motor till he proves himself in the NFL. Quinn had similar question marks coming to the NFL and he turned out to be great so it may turnout to be nothing in Clowney's case but Quinn didn't get drafted near the top of the draft.
