Default I Need a 2nd Round Pass Rusher

Let's say that Clowney, Ealy, Mack and Barr are gone.

What are the best options for a 2nd round pass rusher?

Dee Ford profiles as a solid pass rusher that may be available in the early 2nd round. His draft stock will depend on whether or not teams feel he can contribute as more than just a pass rusher though. Ultimately though I expect that some team will draft him in the 1st round similar to Bruce Irvin.

Jackson Jeffcoat was a very productive pass rusher for Texas although I personally question his athletic upside at the next level. James Gayle shows some ability to get around the edge. Aaron Lynch has the length and athleticism for it but he had a down year and has some off field question marks. People have talked about Chris Smith as a good pass rusher although I personally didn't see it on tape.

As for OLBs Jeremiah Attaochu is a guy that I find intriguing. He shows the burst and athleticism to be a good pass rusher but his technique could still use some work.

Some of these guys are going to go later than the 2nd but they are guys that show some pass rush ability. There are surely other guys as well but these are the prospects that I've watched a decent amount of tape on and feel somewhat comfortable talking about.

Dee Ford and Attaochu were already mentioned. I'm not sure Ford reaches the second round and Attaochu may be a slight reach unless it's in the back end. I like Michael Sam. And Trent Murphy obviously has some pass rush ability if his 25 sacks the last two seasons mean anything.

Does Michael Sam factor into the conversation?

Can Attouchu, Smith and Ford play DE?

Ford and Attaochu were the guys that came to mind for me as second-rounders.

I haven't watched a ton of Michael Sam but he does seem a little small to be a DE and reports say that he struggled in OLB drills at the Senior Bowl.

In terms of who can play DE I'd say Smith is the most likely followed by Attaochu and then Ford. Smith is a little short but he weighed in at 266 which makes him about the same size as Dwight Freeney. Attaochu switched to DE this year and with his weight over 250 it seems possibly for him to put on some more weight and play there in the NFL. I still feel his best position is 3-4 OLB though. Dee Ford just seems too small for DE IMO. He barely weighed over 240 at the Senior Bowl and I don't think putting on weight would be a good idea for him. If he does play 4-3 DE I feel he'll be limited to pass rush situations exclusively.

Trevor Reilly. Like him but he just turned 26. For the second round I'd rather go for Trent Muphy. What he may lack in athleticism he makes up for with Savvy and toughness.

Yep, Marcus is the Smith I like. Already looks to habe some pass rush moves. Love his hand usage. Needs to bend the edge better but can be taught. I also think he has scheme versatility and can stand up at olb, but he doesn't have any experience in coverage as far as I can tell. Prototype Leo to me.

how often does a Leo drop into coverage? and is it man type coverage, or strictly zone? (under in the flat, or hook/ curl) Marcus Smith does seem to have the athletic ability to play some coverage, but based off what i seen Seattle do this year, i didnt really see the leo drop that much.(only seen seattle 3x vs Carolina, San Fran, and Denver)

the LEO usually plays with his hand down; he really doesn't have coverage responsibilities. If he's ever back in coverage, it's essentially just to confuse the quarterback because it's unusual.

Why are so many experts and publications so down on Attouchu most ranking him in the 3rd round?

I haven't watched a ton of him, but my guess is that they see him as a pass-rushing prospect who doesn't have ideal quickness. Not big enough to be a bookend defensive lineman, but perhaps lacking the speed to compensate on the rush. To me, he looked like he picked up a lot of sacks by being an effort and motor player, which isn't a bad thing by any means (especially since teams are probably looking at him as a player who can play multiple positions), but I haven't really seen him do something that popped off the screen at me. He just looks solid but unspectacular.

Okay, you have to pick one of Smith, Ford, Attouchu who do you take for a 4-3 pass rush specialist?

The 2 best DE's likely to be available in round 2 are Crichton of Oregon St. and Jeffcoat of Texas. Aaron Donald of Pittsburgh had a solid workout at the Senior Bowl but didn't play that great during the game, he might be available in round 2.

Crichton is very athletic, a TE in high school who has a non stop motor.

Jeffcoat was defensive player of the year in the Big 12.

Donald is small but was very productive in college.

I would list Ford but I doubt he gets out of round 1.

Attouchu is a bit to small for a DE, I think he needs to play LB.

Assuming his only responsibility was to rush the passer I would go with Ford and I don't think it's particularly close.

As for why people are down on Attaochu, I think it has to do with very inconsistent technique. He shows flashes(he had a dominant 1st quarter against Clemson) but he also disappears for long stretches. At times it seems like he forgets that he has arms and just tries to run by his defender. He's a good athlete for the position although not anywhere near Anthony Barr.

Watched Crichton against Stanford today.

Every snap he just tried to bull rush the OT. Lacked the speed to test the edge. Lacked that first step quickness you look for too.

Someone will take him in the first. Almost guarantee that.

If you are looking for a pass rusher that is going to be looked over and can be had in the 2nd/3rd. Great place to look is Morgan Breslin. Only played in 5 games this year but got off to a great start after 13.5 sacks as a junior. Has played as a 4-3 end and then this year as an OLB in the 3-4.

Probably, but he wasn't listed in the group that was gone

Well, he is getting some late round 1 talk, however the post asked for 2nd round prospects which is where I project him, so he is not likely to be tearing up the game or he would be getting a lot more earlier round 1 talk. Sometimes you have to remember that Oregon St. isn't a great college program and their odd standout can face double and triple teams since he is the only threat.
From the film I watched, I saw an athletic guy who has a non stop motor, that's a pretty good foundation if you want to play in the NFL, but yes, I didn't see anything resembling, Clowney type talent.

I watched Attaochu vs Clemson and Georgia and I have to say I like the burst that he had off the edge.

Smith looks more fluid and I agree with the Avril comparison as he just seems to be flowing around the field.

Attaochu I liked coming out of the 4 point stance he looked explosive and violent. The inside moves and the stunts looked good as he was consistently disrupting the pocket and moving and not getting stuck.

He reminds me a little of Clay Matthews as he just seems to be constantly and violently moving towards the QB.
