Default Late February Mock Draft, One Round

In a simpler world, the draft order wouldn't change. But there's always trading within the first round, and since this year's draft is so deep with talent (meaning there's not much difference between pick 5 and pick 25 or whatever), there's going to be even more trading than usual. But we will proceed as if trading picks was not allowed. I included second round picks by Washington and Indianapolis, so no reader gets left out. May the attacks on me begin. ;)

Blue: second pick
Red: Round 2 pick is first pick in draft.

1. Texans: Johnny Manziel [QB, TAMU]
The inexperienced but mega-talented Manziel had a great workout and great interviews in Indianapolis. He was a redshirt sophomore last season, but the Texans are a ways from winning anyway, so Manziel might as well grow with the rest of the team.

2. Rams: Sammy Watkins [WR, Clm]
St. Louis could trade down and still land the unquestioned top receiver in the draft. The term "safest pick" is usually reserved for offensive lineman, but Watkins may be the safest pick due to his speed and great hands.

3. Jaguars: Blake Bortles [QB, UCF]
Blaine Gabbert was one of the most predictable draft busts ever. With Bortles staying in Florida, he gives this downtrodden franchise another chance to get it right.

4. Browns: Teddy Bridgewater [QB, Lsv]
If they want to finally stop being the Cleveland Clowns, they better not let the smartest quarterback in the draft slip by them.

5. Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney [DE, SCU]
At this point, the draft ran out of top quarterbacks, but Oakland has a defensive tackle playing at one defensive end spot, and a nobody at the other end.

6. Falcons: Greg Robinson [OT, Aub]
Atlanta needs to be more physical on both sides of the ball, and Robinson is big and quick.

7. Buccaneers: Jake Matthews [OT, TAMU]
Johnny Manziel's former protector will play left tackle, and moving Donald Penn to the right side might be a good move for him.

8. Vikings: Justin Gilbert [CB, OkS]
Minnesota's division opponents all have great wide receivers, and the Vikings could use Gilbert.

9. Bills: Mike Evans [WR, TAMU]
In Buffalo's 3-WR offense, Evans would go well with Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods.

10. Lions: Marquise Lee [WR, USC]
The Lions throw so much, they look like they're playing arena football. They might as well go with a great receiver.

11. Titans: Khalil Mack [ELB, Buf]
The new ragime in Nashville may not like current edge linebacker Akeem Ayers as much as the previous coaches did.

12. Giants: Taylor Lewan [OT, Mch]
Lewan once punched a rival Ohio State fan. Hopefully he can keep his temper in control to avoid personal foul penalties.

13. Rams: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix [S, Ala]
Clinton-Dix's potential ability to play free safety is no laughing matter. (Get it? Laughing? Ha Ha? See what I did there?)

14. Bears: Calvin Pryor [S, Lsv]
The whole defense needs more restoration than a 1957 Chevy on "Counting Cars" (which is a weird thing to say about the Bears), and safety is the biggest of all their needs.

15. Steelers: Darqueze Dennard [CB, MchS]
Dennard may be the last star player under Dick LeBeau, who has only so much time left before retirement.

16. Cowboys: Aaron Donald [DT, Pitt]
He may have to gain a little weight to play in the NFL, but Donald could be the league's next great pass rushing tackle in the mold of Warren Sapp and John Randle.

17. Ravens: Eric Ebron [TE, UNC]
With Gary Kubiak, it looks like Baltimore will go with a two tight end offense. Ebron with Dennis Pitta (if he comes back) would be very formidable.

18. Jets: Anthony Barr [ELB, UCLA]
Calvin Pace is a free agent. And even if he stays, Barr would make a better starter anyway.

19. Dolphins: C.J. Mosley [OLB, Ala]
Mosley would learn a lot from playing next to Darnell Ellerby.

20. Cardinals: Cyrus Kouandjio [OT, Ala]
Cyrus slipped a little on draft boards during the Combine, but putting him at left tackle in Phoenix is still an upgrade with a capital U.

21. Packers: Kelvin Benjamin [WR, FSU]
With Jason Jones probably leaving town, the green and yellow need to keep Aaron Rodgers happy.

22. Eagles: Louis Nix [NT, ND]
Current nose tackle Bennie Logan would be better at 3-4 end.

23. Chiefs: Ra'Shede Hageman [34E, Min]
The Golden Gophers DT projects well to the 3-4 end position.

24. Bengals: Odell Beckham [WR, LSU]
A.J. Green is obviously a star, but I'm still not sold on Mohamed Sanu or possible 2014 starter Marvin Jones. Let's give them some competition.

25. Chargers: Bradley Roby [CB, OhS]
It seems like the corners for SD are never that good.

26. Browns: Zach Martin [G, ND]
Many belive Martin will make a better guard than tackle, and that's something the Browns need.

27. Saints: Timmy Jernigan [DT, FSU]
In spite of what you may read and hear, the Saints play more 4-2 defense than 3-3 or 3-4. Jernigan is a good 3t.

28. Panthers: Allen Robinson [WR, PSU]
Carolina has had so many great wide receivers in the past ten years. There's Steve Smith, Steve Smith, Steve Smith, and -- let me think -- oh yeah, Steve Smith.

29. Patriots: Brandin Cooks [WR, OrS]
Just for fun I would like to see Tom Brady throw a pass to the outside once in a while (other than a bubble screen).

30. 49ers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins [TE, Wsh]
The Niners like fullbacks and sixth lineman, so why not a big blocking tight end to go with them and play opposite receiving TE Vernon Davis?

31. Broncos: Jason Verrett [CB, TCU]
Even if Verrett doesn't pan out playing on the outside, he can always wind up in the slot (which still means a lot of playing time in today's NFL).

32. Seahawks: Jace Amaro [TE, TTU]
Both of Seattle's starting tight ends are mainly blockers. The former Red Raiders slot receiver gives them a catching threat.

34. Redskins: Stephon Tuitt [34E, ND]
Tuitt has the size to play head up on the OT, and wouldn't have to learn a new position in suburban D.C.

59. Colts: Brandon Thomas [G, Clm]
In the playoffs, the Patriots exposed the Colts for how physically soft they are on both sides of the ball.

Sorry but thats a beyond horrible draft pick for the 49ers especially after we drafted TE Vance McDonald a year ago and still have Celek/Carrier. UGH.

I'm going by what I saw on a web page written by someone who covers the Saints. I saw three of their games last year, not all 18 of them.

great pick for the bucs, but Penn would not move to RT, he would get cut. Demar Dotson will stay at RT or even move to LT with a Rookie commin in.

I like Gilbert at 8. It's different & certainly fills a major need in a division with Calvin, Marshall, Alshon, Jordy, Cobb....

I take it you did not watch many Bengal game last year or Marvin Jones.
Beckham makes no sense for the Bengals. Jones emerged as a #2 and at times played better then Green. They probable could use a upgrade at slot, but you can wait till later in the draft to get a quality slot guy. If the Bengals target a Offense player in the 1st then it will be a OL either a Tackle or Center depending on what happens with Collins in Free Agency. The Bengals more then likley will target a DE/LB hybrid, DT, CB, or Safety in the 1st.

Aight, then. We normally run a 3-3-5, but one of the 3 LBs is Gallette who slides to DE. Essentially, we run a 4 2 5 with 3 safeties in the game. DT is one of the lowest needs on the team.

Eh, Brady throws to the outside more than he should with the WRs he has at the moment. The only guy capable of getting separation outside at the moment is Dobson. If you want the Pats to go outside more you should get a guy who can win off the snap and with his body. Cooks need to play in space in the NFL which might make him a fit for the Pats in a similar role to Julian Edelman last year, but if you are looking for guys who can win down the sideline then players like Davante Adams and Donte Moncrief fit that mold better.

I would probably prefer one of the TEs at that point or a trade down

I didn't know Dotson was that good and that Penn dropped off so much. That's what's good about threads like this; you learn about teams from their fans. As far as replys, I'm getting what you usually get in mock draft threads -- a combination of roses thrown to me on the stage and eggs/tomatos thrown in anger {LOL}. I'm really getting blasted for the 49ers pick, but it's hard to choose for a team that seems to have everything (except an NFL title recently, and you can't directly draft the Lombardi Trophy).

With Gronkowski coming back, they will surely go back to a two tight end basic lineup. But I like what I saw from Mike Hoomanawanui. However, Hoo is almost exclusively a blocker, and they might want both TEs to be good receivers like before the unfortunate circumstances with Hernandez.

Its a different Jets pick but if Barr falls to the Jets and can play 3-4 OLB as the opposite of Coples, then by all means.

Would prefer offense but if Barr is there, by all means.

and even then a DT who we can only use in sub packages is not a good pick

Hooman does a really good job for the Pats but he is a FA at the moment and doesn't offer the flexibility that some of these guys do. I am actually tempted to want another big bodied guy like ASJ or Niklas over Amaro for 2 reasons.

1. Insurance for Gronk

2. Really become a pound the football type team who can really hurt base defenses in the passing game. With Gronk and someone like Niklas you can't have multiple DBs in the game or they will get run through.

In saying that having a move TE similar to Hernandez worked before so what do I know???

I think the Pats and 9ers picks could be swapped here. But without doing that and going off of how things fell, Verrett made the most sense for SF, followed by Tuitt.

WR, CB, S, DL. Look to those positions for us inside the first.

Even if we ran a 4-2 as you surmised, we would not need a DT here. We have solid starters and good depth. A mid round pick along the defensive pick is not even needed but can be tolerated. A first round at the position is crazy!

Saints take Cooks here!

Apparently, Broderick Bunkley is better than I thought he was.

This class is way too deep at WR and there are way too many holes on defense for the Packers to take Benjamin at 21.

MidwestJimmy,

Your mock works well for the Rams and I agree that Watkins might be one of the safer picks in this draft.

Having said that while there is no doubt Clinton-Dix fills a need I have a hard time seeing Fish pass on a press corner like Dennard if he is available at the #13 pick.

Decent job overall though.....keep 'em coming!
