Default Andre Johnson - Trade Value and Destination

Reportedly unhappy with the Texans' QB situation as well as being "tired of losing," Johnson sat out the first day of the team's OTAs yesterday.

So of course, the trade talk has started. He's 32, yet coming off of 221 catches combined in the last two seasons.

Anyone want to guess where he'll end up?

I don't think you can count the Patriots out if the trade price is right. He'd be an instant #1 WR in that offense and he certainly couldn't complain about the QB situation there. If the Texans are still potentially interested in Ryan Mallett as had been rumored, he could potentially be part of the trade package. Fitting his salary in could be a challenge, but teams are always able to find workarounds if they have to.

From that same division, the Jets could still use someone to pair with Eric Decker, who I think is more of a #2 WR anyway. Plus their owner loves winning the offseason headline battle...

The Browns could certainly use a WR with Gordon likely suspended for the year, but I don't think that would be a more appealing situation for Johnson, so he'd probably be against it. Lateral move at best for him.

The Colts are another possibility. Nicks is 1 year rental and you can never be sure if a guy Wayne's age will be able to come back from an injury like that. They showed a willingness to deal higher picks in recent years as well (Vontae Davis, Richardson.) Doubt the Texans would trade within the division though.

The Panthers could still use more/better WRs, but they haven't shown much inclination to improve by much more. Beyond a raw first-round rookie, it's an ugly group.

And though it's unlikely, you can never count out the 49ers and Seahawks as their nuclear arms race continues. If one thinks the other might be interested, they might jump into the bidding just because.

As for trade value, it will obviously depend a bit on demand. But I could see a 2nd this year with a conditional future 3rd/4th as a solid deal.

Thoughts?

I posted this a week or so ago in the Pats thread, but we need anything at the position right now. I'm a skeptic on the new guys and amendola can't stay healthy. Edelman is a poor man's welker, and Gronk is never going to play a full season for us again either.

If he renegotiated his contract for next year (I think this year its only 6.5 mill) I'm all for it and have been clamoring for it since we were rumored to trade Mallet + Johnson's discontent in Houston.

With all of that said, we wont pull the trigger. Our philosophy here, for whatever reason, is to let Brady will us to the playoffs year in and out using the julian edelmans of the world rather than give him a legit target to throw to (sans 2007, apparently that year was too amazing to allow Brady to ever come close to having it again).

We really do. It wont happen but it really should. We'll probably just pick him up as a FA when the Texans cut him next year and he has next nothing left or something.

Who has $10 million in either cap room or assets for him?

Teams always finagle their cap space to get a guy in these situations. It's amazing what a few restructurings will do, and with the way the cap is projected to grow, it probably won't even catch up with them.

Also, as someone above said, I think he's only in the $6 million range for this season.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/1575/andre-johnson

2014 - $6.5 million
2015 - $10.5 million

Any hit beyond the base salary would be absorbed by the Texans trading him away. His new team would only be responsible for this year's base salary.

Exactly why I don't see a team wanting to trade for him. That and the Texans probably don't want to deal with the cap hit. And why would Houston want to trade him anyways? Because he is unhappy?

I think Andre retires before he is traded.

6.5 million isnt egregious, although it isn't preferable either. If he can still play like the last few years I'd pay that. He also loses about a million of that if he sits training camp, which it looks like it will. 5 Million isn't outlandish, I think anyway.

Hey! Don't forget about the Rams as contenders in the Johnson sweepstakes. Many fans are upset Fish and crew didn't draft a WR in this past draft and we are hoping that a guy like Kenny Britt can stay healthy and out of trouble.

Another good thing about Andre Johnson is that he is a good teammate and not a locker room problem.

So welcome to the Rams, Andre!?!

Jeff Fisher went about 100 years in Tennessee sorely needing a WR and instead got by with what...Nate Washington? Justin Gage?

It's clear he really just doesn't value the position very much. Some coaches/GMs are just like that for whatever reason. There is a position they don't feel is valuable and never, ever address it.

Hey, Amendola is very good when healthy. It's not my fault BB saw a roster with zero receiving targets and decided "you know what, I think I'm good."

Yeah I don't understand the Pats insistence on not adding good outside WRs. I think BB is still scarred by Chad Jackson.

Or maybe how it ended with Moss has something to do with it. I don't know, it just doesn't make any sense.

Giving Brady a great WR made them one of the greatest teams OF ALL TIME in 2007. He simply hasn't even attempted to come close to doing that again. It's borderline insane. I get valuing draft picks, but they pick late every single year and they just end up using picks on Rutgers players and QBs lol.

It's something I just never understood. And it's been for SEVEN years. My best guess is that the idea of anything close to a diva/raw-ish not great guy or work ethic like Chad Jackson was just completely turns him off.

But now, in 2014, it's become very clear that they want to establish a big-time running game and become a 49ers/Seahawks type team based on physicality. We'll see how it goes.

As for Andre, I think they are trying their best to convince him to stay. He hasn't demanded a trade as far as we're aware (although the true best way to demand a trade is to do it behind the scenes because that doesn't completely compromise leverage for the team).

I've been skeptical of the Jets new 'paper' offense, but adding Andre outside would excite me. He's a huge target for their QBs with placement issues and lets Decker be Decker. But I doubt Sandy Alderson wants to give up draft picks. I mean Idzik.

Yeah all of this. Ive been going nuts (still am as Im high jacking this thread I guess) with out absolute disregard to give Brady prime targets to throw to. I just don't get it. Weve never been able to draft wrs, our system just isn't conducive to their growth I guess. Seriously, whoever drafts WRs for the Giants needs to come to NE meow. Right meow.

Back to Johnson, I think when its all said and done he stays put. Doesn't seem like any teams are reaching out to get him and Houston doesn't appear to be shopping him.

Homer me would certainly like him in Pittsburgh. The team will receive about $8-$9 million in cap room June 1st from the Woodley release, and the WR group currently isn't very good, based on on-field production.

Antonio Brown is great, but other than him there isn't much. Projected depth chart is Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore, Martavis Bryant, and Darrius Heyward-Bey. Wheaton hasn't done anything and just this week a report came out that his finger is messed up because he botched the rehab. It looks like Terry Holt's finger, or Bryan Baldinger's. Not good for a young receiver. Bryant is unproven, DHB isn't good, and Moore is a good #3.

Johnson would immediately be put beside Brown, who would probably be the best receiver he's ever played with. Lessen the pressure to perform on Wheaton, and provide Ben with the bigger target he's always wanted.

So homer me thinks it could and would work. Then again, the Steelers rarely trade for anyone, so it's more than likely just a pipe dream.

Non-homer me thinks he could probably wind up in Seattle or Denver. Denver has about $5 million in cap room, and they would probably have to cut Emmanuel Sanders, or include him in the trade, but who cares about him when you can get Andre. Demaryius, Andre, and Welker would probably be the best trio of receivers of all time, lol. They're clearly in win-now mode, so why not go all out this year. They made big signings for the defense, might as well make another big move in the offense.

Yeah...the Steelers trading for a big name player, an offensive skill position player no less, is right outside of "hell freezing over" territory along with the Packers signing someone who will hurt their chances of getting compensatory picks.
