on topic:

Kaep is COLOSSALLY being over paid. Joe Flacco got his money because he WON a Super Bowl. Kaep blows a Super Bowl and an NFC Championship game and he still gets paid?

Brees was a crazy unique situation. Brees jacked up his shoulder bad on the last game of the season. Some doctors wouldnt even clear him and the Chargers had a top 5 pick who had been developing on the bench for a few years. It was an easy choice for the Chargers.

Why discredit the fact that Kaepernick got San Francisco to those points in the season? Jay Cutler and Tony Romo got a ton of money as well and between the two Cutler got the Bears to one NFC title game.

Alex Smith got them to an NFCC game as well and was 2 Kyle Williams fumbles away from a Superbowl appearance. Does Smith deserve 61m guaranteed?

The sooner the better for this extension because the money is only getting bigger for franchise QBs. Wait until Andrew Luck gets his deal.

Whether he deserves it or not is irrelevant. He was going to get it no matter what. Nature of the business.

Very true . I'd to see what Luck gets after his rookie contract is up. I bet it is double. I just don't like the 61 mil part. That's a lot of doe fork over.

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl and he was let go. You don't hand out mega deals based on one game.

Strange.

Most unique aspect of Colin Kaepernick’s new deal: it contains $12 million in signing bonus, whereas most big QB deals are $24-$40 million.

Colin Kaepernick specifically requested his deal allow 49ers flexibility to negotiate extensions with players such as WR Michael Crabtree.

Happy! NOW let's see how these Niners stay competitive while staying under the cap and having less to spend on other positions.

Well the benchmark is set. If Wilson takes less than that he might as well be literally Jesus Christ reincarnated.

And my daily reminder: you don't get in cap hell for signing good players to huge deals or slightly "over"paying guys like this. Even the harshest Kaep critics would tell he's worth something more than $10M annually. You get in cap hell for signing bad players/guys who end up getting hurt to huge deals. Or signing three separate non-elite RBs to huge or just large (Tolbert) deals like Carolina did.

The Niners future will depend on how these past two draft classes pan out. Not the fact that they can't afford big-name free agents, which usually either completely bust or work out for a year or two. Very few of those types end up being worth it in the end. Building through the draft and supplementing your core with a few free agents here and there is usually the best course of action. Having big cap space id overrated and usually means you suck at drafting.

Meh. Drafting good also means losing cap space. Cost a lot to keep the guys you like around. Unless you're good at trading those players for picks and restocking the shelf.

Teams don't like using high picks on backup QB's which is why they are so attached to their starters. If the 49ers say drafted Geno Smith in the 2nd round last year, they would have more leverage with Kap and less inclined to overpay as they would have a backup who they feel could be a starter.

I was pointing out that quarterbacks with much more time in the league yet less team success deeper into the postseason got money in the neighborhood of Kaepernick so I'm not sure why there's such a backlash to what he got.

Alex Smith won't get $61 guaranteed but he'll get $15 million/year, which will be a lovely debate as well.

The point is that drafting well and having to pay the players you drafted a lot of money is better use of cap space than paying guys other teams didn't want.

Could not have said it better. The last big free agent signing we had was Justin Smith. If you look at the guys up for big extenstions, they're guys we drafted. That's a good problem to have and one I'd welcome every year.

What a terrible contract for a glorified RB.

The 49ers will be looking up at the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals in the next few years from the bottom of the division.

You do run into problems building your roster if you are paying any single player a TON of money.

Especially an only average QB a ton of money. See Baltimore Ravens & Joe Flacco.

Paying their QB a measly sum was one of the advantages the 49ers had the past few years, but it no longer will be an advantage, and in fact, it will be a liability, because Kaepernick is DEFINITELY not a top-5 QB in this league, and arguably not a top-10 QB if we don't see any more development as a passer.
