Default Former Players becoming coaches

Been having a debate with some friends. I'm wondering the opinion of everyone when to comes to Ed Reeds influence on safeties if he was hired as an assistant DB coach tomorrow. Do you believe Reed is coach material and would be the difference between our safeties being good and really good/great?

If those DBs didn't get it or have it while he was in uniform, I highly doubt it would make a difference. Everyday he's in pads with you giving you live action which is the best teaching. What can Reed say to make a bigger impact on performance?

Good players don't necessarily equate to good coaches. Rod Woodson was a position coach for the Raiders a couple of seasons ago. He was promptly fired if I remember correctly along with the rest of the staff. At the end of the day it usually comes down to the player actually having the talent to succeed at the next level. A notable player isn't necessarily going to make a random NFL player any better than a coach you've never heard of before.

It helps, but being a good player doesn't necessarily mean you'll be a good coach. Having known what making every cut feels like firsthand is a huge advantage over those who haven't done it.

Still, that's such a small part of coaching that it won't make or break it for any coach, you have to be able to do so much more. But Ed Reed was so good and was so solid mentally that he'll be good.

The best students aren't always the best teachers, and vice versa. Education is a skill unto itself.

To be a good coach you need to be obsessed w/ football, be intelligent to understand whats going on, be patient and be able to communicate the play/technique. Being such a good player for 20+ years they naturally don't have patience and maybe not the communication skills. That is my guess it reminds me of a professor I had who was a legit genius but got stuck teaching a 200 level stats class. He couldn't explain anything and half the class failed. He was smart and a nice guy he just couldn't explain it.

I remember in one of the mid 2000 Maddens players would retire and turn up as assistant coaches a year or two later if you had a franchise.

From what you know and heard about Ed Reed does anyone think he would be worth taking a shot on? I feel like he has a lot of ego and communication problems. I think if he could fix that he could have something to contribute but I'm not sure how he would gel as a coach

I agree IDK how good a coach Reed would be. Yes he does watch a ton of film and LOVES football but u need to have that along w/ the patience and communication skills to go along with that. IDK if he has that. It would be sick to see a HOF player rise through the coaching ranks with his team but not everyone has a fairy tale ending. We were way too spoiled with how Ray retired.

Ed Reed would be a terrible coach.

1) He plays with instinct and unreal natural ability not fundementals and discipline
2) He is not very smart, not saying coaching football is rocket science but you should at least be able to put a sentence together to communicate with the players adaquately
3)Why would he work as a positional coach for the money they get paid when he can take his bumbling nonsense to ESPN like Ray lewis and sooooo many athletes that make no sense have and make way more money

Former player coaches are usually the try hard, work hard, take to coaching well despite being unspectacular athletes type of players. For instance recently for the steelers Duce Staley and Deshea Townsend have landed assistant coaching jobs elsewhere, but they arent TV caliber former player.

The super talented guys that would be great coaches (like peyton manning) have no reason to be coaches with a TV gig absolutely lined up for them

Some guys might just be passionate about coaching though and take it on right away or late in their lives...Carnell Lake is a DB coach, Joe Greene was a scout, ect ect.

There exceptions obvioulsy, but the high profile guys probably will go TV route ore maybe even higher up than coaching....John Elway- Esque

Then theres Favre coaching High School for what I am sure is a pretty lucrative rate (for a HS coach at least)

EDIT: Terrible might be strong, i just think hes an unlikely candidate
