Big fan of the Corey Nelson pick. Instant special team contributor and really can fly to the football. For a 7th round pick he's a good risk with his potential in JDR's system.

the 4th-7th round picks are normal 4th-7th round picks. no one i expect to make a special impact, but nothing i thought was horrible.

i don't like latimer, we'll see in the preseason if he changes my mind (nothing specific i can even point to, just gut feeling that he won't be a real contributer).

i'm happy with roby, solely knowing how many teams we tried to trade with to move up. we tried to make the big move for mosley (i assume), but no one was selling for what we wanted to pay. at least roby plays a position we needed a body at.

Overall, I'm satisfied. They never reached for a ILB and I feel they got two premium talents (Roby, Latimer). I just hope these guys have the work ethic to match.

Here's an interesting bit:

http://www.coloradoan.com/story/spor...draft/8948673/

Quote:
The Broncos, Barrett said, plan to use him much the way CSU did, as a pass-rushing outside linebacker/defensive end in their 3-4 defense.

"I see that as a plus right there," Barrett said. "They don't have a lot of depth at the position I play. They have a really good No. 1 (DeMarcus Ware), but that's about it."
We play a lot of different fronts, but it would certainly be interesting to see us put a little more emphasis on a 3-4 look. Von and Ware standing, the tweener guys we have like Wolfe and Malik Jackson at 5-tech, Pot Roast in the middle.

i don't buy wolfe as a 34 DE. and really, i don't like von doing anything that doesn't involve rushing the qb. i guess if they want to call it a 34, that's fine, but it seems like a silly distinction at that point.

Essentially it's a 5-2 - Von and Ware are mostly going to be crashing or rushing the passer. The two guys actually playing LB need to cover well to compensate for that.

Default Preseason game 1

That was a pretty decent showing for the first game back.

It seems we have a lot of depth in the front 7. I really liked the pressure both Ware and Quanterus Smith were able to generate. Some of the question marks I had about LB look like they might get answered by the solid play of Irving and McCray - hope they can keep that up. The back four weren't nearly as impressive other than Ward... we definitely don't have the same level of depth there.

I didn't have any doubts about our starting offense, but the surprise amongst the 2nd / 3rd stringers was the play of Juwann Thompson. He ran with power and decisiveness, which are things we could definitely use.

All i took out of that game was that our rbs are probably better than I thought, and the d line may actually be genuine strength this year.

Default Preseason game 2

A good showing today, but I'd say the take home messages are similar to the last outing.

Positives: 1st team offense, defensive front 7 play, overall team depth

Negatives: Still too many mistakes / penalties by the DBs

Default Depth chart prediction

Here's my take:

QB (3) - Manning, Osweiler, Dysert
RB (4) - Ball, Hillman, Anderson, Thompson
TE (4) - J.Thomas, Green, Tamme, Morrah
OT (4) - Clady, Clark, Justice, Schofield (also plays OG)
OG (2) - Vasquez, Franklin
C (2) - Ramirez, Montgomery
WR (6) - D.Thomas, Sanders, Welker, Latimore, Caldwell, Norwood

DE (4) - Ware, Wolfe, Jackson, Smith
DT (4) - Knighton, Williams, Austin, Unrein
LB (7) - Miller, Irving, Trevathan, McCray, Marshall, Johnson, Nelson
CB (6) - Talib, Harris, Roby, Webster, Bolden,T.Carter
S (4) - Ward, Moore, Q.Carter, Bruton

Specialists (3) - Prater, Colquitt, Brewer

Stashed on PS/IR/PUP - TE Robinson, LB Barrow, DT Vickerson, DE Anunike, OL Painter, RB Bibbs

The 7th LB is definitely a question mark - I can see the team moving Nelson to the PS and adding another DL instead. Similarly, I can see them only going 3-deep at either RB or TE (not both, though), but I'm not sure where they'd add the extra body. Maybe OL?

They ended up keeping 8 LBs, with the extra one as cover off for Trevathan. Our SLBs will play a lot of end in the nickle/dime looks, as the two LDEs are basically DT/DE tweeners who can kick inside on passing downs. Nice to see that both Barrow and Nelson played well enough to stick with the team... seems the team has a pretty good eye for later round LBs.

OL depth is a definite concern - Cornick, Garland and Schofield are a very green, untested group. I wouldn't be surprised if we fished a veteran OL out of the sea of cuts as insurance.

Paradis and Bibbs both to the practice squad. I thought Bibbs looked like the most fluid runner we had out there in preseason, but a) he was generally going against 2nd / 3rd string defenses and b) it's not the running that's a problem for rookies, its the blocking and passing game and Bibbs didn't have those things working at all.

loved manning bouncing back after that awful pick to tie the game at the end. loved thomas catching it against "the best corner in nfl history" or whatever. hated that we let wilson walk the ball up the field in OT.

that was some shockingly garbage OT defense. i don't know how you play prevent in that situation, but it's inexcusable.

oh, and montee ball is a predictably worthless pile of crap. between him and hillman, whoever scouts running backs needs to be canned. i guess i should just be happy we didn't take lattimore.

Good - The play of the defense. Kept us in the game when everything else was going down the crapper.

Bad - The offense. Execution, discipline, toughness, effort... ugh. Considering the level of talent we have on this side of the ball, it isn't acceptable to only show up for 1 quarter of the game.

Ugly - Coaching / leadership. Stick a fork in Fox because he's done. The approach is too conservative and they aren't doing a good job making adjustments.

The OL isn't helping, but Ball is looking just like Moreno did when he started. Not decisive enough, not enough burst to hit the hole hard. I'd really like to see some of the younger guys get a chance... but they haven't gotten the pass protect reps with Manning which I'm sure is a big factor in the decision-making.

Edit - Hillman looks like a total bust. He's also in the doghouse... you'd think those two things would add up to an easy cut.

Yeah, I'm surprised we didn't try to bring more heat on Russel Wilson early in the OT... he seemed rattled in the 4th Q after the safety and INT.

I normally don't think in terms of moral victories, but... I felt like the Seahawks played a great game on both sides and we played like ****... but we still somehow managed to take the game into OT and nearly pull off the upset.

If we play them again, I like our chances.

agreed, though that's a great point... ball did seem to do a tremendous job in pass pro when i was looking (i may have missed some bad blocks, but it seemed like he was making good pick ups when he stayed in).

but yeah, there's just nothing special there on running plays.

if we can, like diehard mentioned, start playing more than 1 quarter of football a game, i'd totally agree. that we were able to keep it close, and have a chance to win at the end (i mean, if the coin flip had gone our way) in their house i think was impressive.

demaryius has got to get his **** together. i don't get why he's so inconsistent this year.

First game in awhile where the defense is why we had a chance.

Offense was a pile of poo for most of the game.

So, welcome back. Were you gone?

Enjoyed the game yesterday from the Seattle point of view and as an overrall fan. Agree on Thomas, if he isn't injured then not sure what his excuse is.

I agree with the earlier sentiment that the Broncos needed to try to create something in OT. Looked like a very vanilla defense that was just trying to hold on to give up no more than a FG. Not seeing much of a running game there for Denver. Marshawn Lynch is the big differance in those two teams.

was nice to see von miller having an impact again. the def gives the impression once they are used to playing with each other that they could be unit capable of winning some playoff games.

the offense just looks wrong atm. hopefully this tough first half of the season helps them figure out how to move the ball against competent defenses

They need to start with the mental errors. OL doesn't even seem to know their blocking assignments. Sometimes looks like the team has read their press clippings too much and has forgotten that you gotta work for it.

It's frustrating because I still remember the Shanny days when the inside and outside zone runs were the foundation for all things offense both in practice and on the field. Run game is about reps... hearing Fox talk about the TE trap run disaster that they "didn't practice much" was painful. Chalkboard X's and O's can make something look great, but players gotta be prepared well enough to make it happen on the field.

I am getting the distinct impression that this program is a little too player-friendly. They better use this time off to repeatedly drill their base runs, get the OL in sync and perhaps give some of the young guys a chance to step in for the vets who don't seem to have their heads in the game.

player friendly and overly reliant on peyton. does adam gase do anything? it doesn't show on game day. and i've never thought peyton should be the only one in control of the offense - i think that cost the colts for years.

I think Gase and Manning talk a lot of offensive theory, go through stacks of play cutouts and work the whiteboard. On gameday? We get Foxball, Manning freelancing at the LoS, or some combination of both.

It would make more sense to me for our offensive braintrust to script the first dozen plays, see how the defense reacts, then make adjustments. In other words, have a little more focus on strategy than tactics. We shouldn't have situations like the SB where Manning tries to audible out of the first play.
