Default The 2015 Dallas Cowboys Draft Thread

This is a very early look at players that Im looking forward to watching next season. This isnt a top ten list; it includes players I can see going on all three days of the draft. Last years list had two players return to college, one undrafted free agent, one 6th rounder, one 5th rounder, one 4th rounder, one 3rd rounder, one 2nd rounder, and two 1st rounders. Ideally, thats what Im shooting for. I wait until after the draft to see which positions we addressed and I also try to consider pending free agents. Since we drafted Demarcus Lawrence, Im excluding the player who would have been number one on this list, defensive end Shilique Calhoun from Michigan State. Im a lifelong West Coaster so I apologize for the heavy dose of Pac12 players.

10. Claude Pelon DT USC (6-5/285)
http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-f...on_889588.html
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2515509/claudeson-pelon

Why would the Cowboys need him? The Cowboys still aren’t solid at the 1-tech. Tyrone Crawford is an unknown and Terrell McClain is on his fourth team in five years. Pelon is a big, strong kid who moves with violence and power. He has surprising agility for a man his size and has exceptional hand quickness. I could see him playing the 5-tech in a 3-4 or either DT spot in a 4-3 (think Tony McDaniel in Seattle as a big 3-Tech). I got to watch Claude up close this past season and I’m scared of what he will be able to do with the help of the USC training staff and a D1 weight room. I saw him at spring ball a few weeks ago and he already looks bigger and stronger.
College Numbers: This will be first year at USC but after an impressive spring camp, he has already risen to the 1st team on the Trojans’ depth chart. He played at Mesa Community College in 2013 and for Eastern Arizona in 2012.

9. Josh Shaw CB USC (61/195)
http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-f...aw_796455.html

Why would the Cowboys need him? If we continue to run the defensive scheme we are using, a big, physical cornerback like Shaw would make a ton of sense. Shaw offers versatility since he has played safety and cornerback in college (also played quarterback in high school). He is an aggressive player and usually matches up with the other teams #1 WR.
College Numbers: In his 2 years at USC and 1 year at Florida, he has 119 tackles, 6 interceptions, 14 passes defended, and 1 defensive TD.

8. Mario Edwards, Jr. DE Florida State (63/294)
http://www.seminoles.com/sports/m-fo...jr_808184.html

Why would the Cowboys need him? Depends on whether or not the Cowboys approach with the defensive line works out this year. The plan this year is to hope Anthony Spencer can get healthy and that journeymen Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie can help create a Seahawk-like rotation to get the job done. I have some hope for Ben Gardner but that might be too much to ask of a 7th rounder right away. Edwards is the son of the former Cowboys cornerback Mario Edwards who Jerry drafted in 2000. He plays right end for the Seminoles but seems built to play strong side end and can slide inside on passing downs.
College Numbers: In two years at Florida State, he has 38 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 defensive TD.

7. Duke Johnson RB Miami (59/206)
http://www.hurricanesports.com/ViewA...CLID=205558729
http://youtu.be/466iWlwcIDA

Why would the Cowboys need him? This is me thinking that Scott Linehan may be looking for a Reggie Bush-like speed back to compliment the power run game. Duke Johnson can be that homerun threat, assuming he recovers from last years season-ending ankle injury. Hes rumored to be a 4.4 40 guy and he plays faster in games, gets to top speeds quickly. Johnson will bring versatility to the team as a RB, slot WR, and as a dangerous return man.
College Numbers: In his two years at the U, he has 1867 yards rushing, 298 yards receiving, and 1288 yards as a return man. 19 total TDs.

6. Damarious Randall FS Arizona State (60/189)
http://www.thesundevils.com/ViewArti...B_OEM_ID=30300

Why would the Cowboys need him? Hes a Free Safety with ball skills. He can play CB and returns punts as well. He has some Ed Reed to him where he really reads quarterbacks well and is always in position to make the tackle. He is by no means a hitter but he wont avoid contact either. I know Damarious from his days at Mesa and hes a special athlete with big play ability.
College Numbers: In one year at ASU, he had 71 tackles and 3 INTs. Missed first few games due to injuries, started last 10 games of the season. In his first start against Notre Dame (at AT&T Stadium) he set a new Sun Devils for tackles in a game with 17. Previously played at Mesa Community College where he was named ACCAC Defensive Player of the Year and was an NJCAA First-Team All-American.

5. Eric Striker OLB Oklahoma (60/220)
http://www.soonersports.com/ViewArti...CLID=208409651

Why would the Cowboys need him? The Cowboys came very close to drafting Ohio States Ryan Shazier this past draft. Striker had a coming out party against Cyrus Kouandjio in last years Sugar Bowl. Hes more known for his pass-rushing but his size dictates hell play 4-3 OLB, most likely Will. He was a highly recruited safety so Im not all that worried about his coverage skills (he had 3 passes broken up last year). Hes probably the one player Im most interested in watching this year to see if he will still put up numbers now that hes a known commodity.
College Numbers: In two years at Oklahoma, he has 56 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. 2013 was his first year as a starter.

4. Tre Jackson G Florida State (64/339)
http://www.seminoles.com/sports/m-fo...son_tre00.html

Why would the Cowboys need him? We supposedly came very close to sending our 2015 2nd round pick to draft LSU Guard Trai Turner in the 3rd round. Throw in that Doug Frees 2015 cap hit is over $11M, the talk that the team has pretty much penciled in Zack Martin as the eventual RT, and maybe we use that same 2nd rounder to draft a day one starter like Jackson.
College Numbers: 28 career starts in his three years at Florida State.

3. Ifo Ekpre-Olumu CB Oregon (510/195)
http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.d...CLID=205237521

Why would the Cowboys need him? The 2014 season will be critical years for Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne. They both have huge contracts and for the first time the Cowboys are in a position to afford the cap hits of moving on from either or both of them. If we do, the position becomes a huge need. Ekpre-Olumu is projected to be one of the top cornerbacks available. Pronounced ee-fo eck-pray-olo-moo, Ive heard a few fans fittingly call him the Osprey for his ballhawking skills. Ive been lucky enough to talk to Ducks Secondary coach John Neal a few times and he claims that Ifo is the best defensive back prospect he has had at Oregon. Thats high praise considering what TJ Ward and Jairus Byrd have accomplished in the NFL. Ifo should be a contender for the Jim Thorpe Award next year and is likely a top 20 pick.
College Numbers: In three years at Oregon, he has 181 tackles, 37 passes defended, and 7 interceptions.

I like it, but depending on how the safety play goes this year, I'd add this guy--

3. Derron Smith
Experience: Senior (RS) | School: Fresno State
Height: 5-11 | Weight: 200 lbs.
Projected: Round 2-3
2013 Season Stats:
87 Tackles, 8.0 TFL, 4.0 Sacks, 7 INT, 6 PBU, 1 QBH

2. Todd Gurley RB Georgia (61/232)
http://www.georgiadogs.com/sports/m-...ey_793117.html

Why would the Cowboys need him? DeMarco Murray is in the last year of his contract and neither Lance Dunbar or Joseph Randle has shown enough to be a feature back. A few years ago I would have thought Gurley was a lock to be drafted early but teams are starting to deemphasize the position. Still, he should be drafted in the middle to low first round. Great combination of power and speed, he would look good running behind the now rebuilt Cowboys offensive line.
College Numbers: In two years at Georgia, he has 2374 yards rushing and 27 rushing TDs. He also has 53 receptions for 558 yards and another 5 TDs. Started 22 of 24 college games.

1. Shaq Thompson OLB Washington (62/231)
http://www.gohuskies.com/ViewArticle...CLID=208062105

Why would the Cowboys need him? Same logic as Striker, the Cowboys are looking to upgrade at outside linebacker. Both Bruce Carter and Justin Durant are pending free agents after the season. Thompson may not be as fast as Shazier but hes just as athletic and has better football instincts. He started out a safety and returned kicks as a freshman. Theres even some talk of him playing both ways this year as a running back. Hes the kind of impact Will linebacker that will play every down and is equally effective versus the run and pass.
College Numbers: In two years at Washington, he has 152 tackles and 4 interceptions.

You should tag each guy to the round you project them at right now. Those will always change in the future, but it's fun to look back on. Last year I had us taking Ealy in Round 4 in my 1st mock. Look how off that was. :)

You know it's coming. It's going to be the same thing as Manziel this year. Jerrah won't be able to help himself because Romo is getting older, Winston is the hottest prospect, etc.

One thing I will say this early about 2015 though is that this could be the year that they finally go safety in the first round since 2002. Matt Johnson could be hurt again. Church could miss a few games, Wilcox steps in there and shines, and then Heath is stuck covering again. That could force them to finally go after FS early.

D-UNIT'S DALLAS COWBOYS MOCK DRAFT #1

So it begins here...

It's been a few weeks of college football and some thoughts have already started to form about this year's draft and the exciting players that will be available. Looking at the Cowboys 2 weeks in, the defense has been better than advertised, but we still know better... right??? Maybe Marinelli really is THAT good. We shall see. The offense has been lead by the strength of the running game but is still too reliant on Murray staying healthy. This mock reflects Defense and the Running game. So here goes. BOOM!

ROUND 1 - SHAWN OAKMAN, BAYLOR (6'9, 280)

First MAN CRUSH of the year. This is a projection pick based off where I think Oakman could end up as a draft prospect. Oakman has a jaw dropping FREAK of a body. Last season was his first for Baylor and while he only had 33 tackles, 12.5 for loss and 2 sacks, I think this season he should breakout and dwarf those numbers. I recall reading an article where Art Briles was raving about Oakman being unblockable during the offseason as I first started scouting prospects for this year, and so far through 3 games he already has 3 (even though they were only against lowlifes Buffalo and SMU). Right now, Scouts Inc doesn't list him on their Top 32. Kiper has him rated as his 7th best DE. If I'm right, he's going to cost us a mid-first round pick.

ROUND 2 - ANTHONY HARRIS, VIRGINIA(6'1, 185

Ballhawk. ACC Defenisve Back of the Week for his game against Louisville where he picked off his first INT of the season. Last season he went OFF with 8 INTs and 6 PDs. He'll need to prove that last season wasn't a fluke, but hopefully he flies under the radar a little more. Landon Collins from Alabama is getting most of the love at Safety this year from the draftniks, but Harris is the kind of smart, instinctual ballhawk that fills a long time need.

ROUND 3 -DENZEL PERRYMAN, MIAMI (6'0, 242)

Nicknamed "The President" shouldn't he be on America's Team? Perryman is a throwback to those old school nasty Miami Linebackers. He packs heat and punishment on the field and has the kind of personality that can give the defense an identity. Might not be the biggest or fastest, but he does one thing that is a neccessity for this defense... he is a sure tackler.

ROUND 4 - RB JAY AJAYI, BOISE ST (6'0, 215)

The "Boise State Special" for 2015! Cowboys love to dip in their Broncos well and next year, Ajayi just might be that guy. He packs the right combination of power, speed, elusiveness and vision that I think this team needs to add, even if we keep Murray. He is a replica of Murray in size and if up to me, I would add more redundancy than add a scatback to our RB corps.

haha we can share him. Our favorite prospects have been similar over the years so that's not a surprise to me. Oakman may play himself out of our reach though, the guy's got a top 5 physical tool box.

It's still early for me to start playing around with mocks, way too many questions that need to be answered on defense before I can start to pinpoint our needs. Can Wilcox prove to be stable? Is Lawrence a legit rush end? Can McClain stay out of jail/retirement? Melton's future? There are arguments for every level of our defense that one could make to spend early picks on.

I will say though I would like to come out of the first 2 days with another OL. Doug Free is a FA after this season and Parnell looks like a lost cause, we'll need to address RT. Whether that means sliding Martin out (which I'm not a fan of) and looking for G depth/competition, or bringing in a true RT.

I agree with you about RB. I'd much rather see another bellcow behind Murray instead of the scatbacks like Dunbar and Randle. I wish they gave Ryan Williams a chance.

Ryan Williams is getting a chance ;) We signed him to our practice squad :)

PSU/former PSU guys <3 Only worry with Oakman is consistency. He has insane tools and yet only flashes. I'd love to pair him with Marinelli though. That's borderline unfair.

100% agree on needing a RT. Free is awful again.

Actually, Ryan Williams slipped my mind. You're probably right.

It wouldnt surprise me to see Williams getting the call to start over Dunbar and Randle if Murray would get hurt. Those 2 are simply complimentary backs, but valuable enough that the Cowboys didn't want to lose either by putting them on the PS.

With OT, I thought about it too, but I think we're going to have to chill on using top picks to replace Free. We're going to have to find a steal somehow. Can't keep feeding money into that OL. They can't all get Tyron deals when their rookie deals are over. The positive about having 3 young 1st round picks there though is the hope that they should be able to compensate a little more and as they grow together their chemistry and unity should help a lot. I can't say Parnell is lost yet either since I haven't seen him on the field in a long time.
