Really????? We offered 4yr 40mil, thats 10/yr. Philly got him at 5/60 which is 12/yr. Maybe i am bad at math or something, but i thought 12 was more than 10. Maybe checking facts before you try and knock someone would be a better approach to this board.

The only difference is that Peppers had elite production for a long time before he hit free agency.

Peppers averaged a little over 10 sacks before he hit free agency and Mario is at 8.8. I don't think he's that far off and Mario is hitting FA at a younger age than Peppers. Don't be surprised by the contract he gets.

So those of you who are thinking Victor Butler has a chance to be a starter, you can throw that idea out the window. Thank you Stephen Jones, so far it's 1 good decision, and 0 bad ones for this off-season!
Players can improve. Plus, it doesn't matter who starts in this defense. It's all about the plays being called at the time. Victor Butler has a great role in this defense. He's a really good pass rusher that Ryan can use in the nickel when we send Ware, Spencer and Butler in to attack the QB.

We've taken the Veteran over-the-hill FA approach with the OL before. Let's do something different.

What does he even have left in his tank? All I hear out of Minnesota is that he's washed up.

Oh yea? Didn't know that.

The suggestions on Waters were post draft at the end of FA and after we made our cuts, so that makes a difference too.

Going into the offseason I think we should elevate the need with the kind of player that will be around for a while.

Ware really wants Spencer back, so I'm willing to give him a chicken dinner to return.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/ar...ts-to-see.html

"I think it's really important to get Spencer back because if you look back, he's not a guy who is probably going to have 40 or 50 sacks, but at the end of the day, he's a run-stopper," Ware said Saturday night while representing Red Bull at the Supercross event at Cowboys Stadium. "He drops a lot and you see a lot of pass breakups and a lot of tackles for loss, so he's making a lot of plays for us but they are subtle plays. He's a solid player we need to keep."

"I rush 90 percent of the time and he drops 90 percent of the time," Ware said. "But when it's time to rush the passer, he's always been there. When we've run a 4-3, he was a defensive end who got pressure."

I'm starting to feel like Kosier is also on the chopping block. Anyone think Arkin is ready to take over or that Garrett will do the same thing as last year (with Nagy and Costa) and force him in (ready or not)?

Again, just feeding some thoughts here, but if we're okay with letting Kosier start for another year, why not Hutchinson? I know he isn't the all-pro he was a few years ago, but he's got to have something left in the tank, right?

Are we ok with letting Kosier start another year???

I dunno... Hutch may be ok on a short term deal, but I'd feel like the Ravens signing Andre Gurode after he left us. It just won't do us any good. I feel like he's going off name recognition. Then again, I haven't really watched him.

Might even be better off starting Arkin.

Somebody is going to sign Terence Newman and they're gonna think the same thing we'd be thinking with signing Hutchinson. Gut feeling.... bad idea, but there's always a chance I suppose.

Only if a vet is brought in at Center.... I dont think Garrett would roll the dice and chance stunting everyone's growth. Running the entire interior line with little to no experience across the board would be ludicris and hurt everyone imo.

The shelf lives of the two are drastically different though. And Newman was exposed nationally multiple times. But i mean, if Frank Walker and Alan Ball have stuck around so long, i guess Newman can as well..

Funny you mention the Gurode situation, because given what we saw this past year, i couldn't possibly see how we could justify saving the extra couple of million we did on Gurode for that abortion of a center in Costa.

If there's a chance we can sign him for the veteran minimum, i wouldn't mind losing Kosier and sticking Hutch in there.

Good news!

Quote:
Although Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones reiterated several times Tuesday that no final decisions have been made, it appears extremely unlikely, even unfathomable, that the team would consider bringing back free-agent linebackers Bradie James and Keith Brooking according to Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News. While eulogizing the careers of both players, Jones gave the impression the two veterans will not be part of the Cowboys' plans in 2012.

"Bradie and Brooking are two of the best leaders, personalities I have ever had the pleasure of being around," Jones said. "They're great guys. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. That's what we've got to decide. But no one respects those guys more than we do, our family does, than the Cowboys do. Obviously when you make a decision to continue or discontinue, it is a big one."

Tell yourself whatever you want about Butler, but he isn't starting caliber because of his size, and i'm glad the organization sees that. Besides, how do we know Victor Butler isn't just a flash player? He has gotten limited snaps and made the occasional sack. So what? How do we know he wouldn't just be another Troy Hambrick, Julius Jones, etc. etc.? Butler isn't good enough to start anyway, but even if he did I doubt he would be as good as he is in limited action. A full workload is a lot different.

To Hutchinson, no. That's just stupid. I doubt he is even on their radar. The reason Kosier would be better is because he's been in our system for 6 years and knows the guys on the OL. I actually like Kosier. We need to remember he was playing with plantar fasciitis for the whole year. If Arkin beats him out then great, but I think Kosier can have one more serviceable year if healthy.

My dream OL would be this:

LT- Smith
LG- Nicks (In free agency)
C- Konz (1st round trade down)
RG- Kosier (if Arkin is ready that's awesome, but I like kosier's veteran presence for one more year. Kind of the wise man of the group)
RT- Free

Add that with great depth in Kowalski, Nagy, Costa, and Parnell, and our OL goes from mediocre at best to having probably the best line since the teams of the 90's, both with skill and youth. None of these players besides kosier whom which we already have a replacement for is anywhere near the end of their career. Free and Nicks are at the beginning of their primes, everyone else hasn't even reached it yet.

It's all very doable as well. I really hope Jerry continues to focus on the OL and make it a serious strength of our team. I hope the days of thinking you can get by with average guys there are over. Look at that potential OL.... ah a man can dream. DeMarco would go for 2,500!!!!!!!!!

As for Stephen Jones saying Brooking and Bradie are all but gone, great news. Read it earlier today. There was speculation before this news broke that we might bring one back for depth just because we have no one... thank God that's not happening. I don't care if the back-ups we get a from some D3 scrub school, just get me athletes who can move. Bradie and Brooking were up there with the biggest liabilities in the NFL on any team. Bobby Wagner! Bobby Wagner!

It's very possible and in my opinion would be the best possible route to take this off-season. It all depends on the how much the team wants to put resources into the offensive line.

Get Nicks, use the money left over to get whatever you can on defense (Soliai for NT and Terrell Thomas for CB would probably still be affordable) and then after you take Konz use the rest of the draft for defense.

The defense may still not be perfect, but I like to build on strengths, and our offense would be damn near unstoppable with a healthy DeMarco Murray, and adding Nicks and Konz.

Go to the last bullet point:

I now have no interest in watching the Cowboys until that changes. I'm unbelievably pissed. Look at the comments under the article. Sums up my exact thoughts. Wow.

RT- Free

Butler can rush the passer. He's not a starting caliber OLB but I never said that. So don't put words in my mouth. There's a role for him on this team and he doesn't need to start in order to bring an impact.

As for Nicks, how will you feel when the Saints sign him? Are you going to admit that all your posts about getting him were ridiculous?

Not really, as of now he's an unrestricted free agent and we have cap space. Why not speculate? Why even talk about the draft then? That's way more uncertain than Nicks hitting the market or not.

But it doesn't matter now, we are never going to win in the playoffs with Ratliff at NT. We might as well concede defeat for the next 4 years.
