Fact of the matter is it wasn't our defense that was in the toilet for the majority of the year, it was the offense and terrible play-calling. Considering how many games we didn't do anything in the 1st half at all, you could say we only played offense for half of those games. But we sure as hell had to play defense for 4 quarters without many of our best players to keep us in the game.

There were 3 minutes left in the Redskins game from winning the division with that make shift defense, 3 timeouts, and which side of the ball ****** us? But yea let's blame it on the defense that makes much more sense

Bruce Carter's Reaction: "WTF!"

Rick Gosselin: "No commitment to the run game so you fire RB coach. No healthy bodies on D so you fire coordinator. The real problems need to be addressed."

Sterling Moore: "Not Happy Right Now"

Results oriented business..hate JG and his playcalling all you want, he's had 2 top 3 offenses, 4 Top 7, and never been outside the top 13.

Compare that to Rob's 9 years.

It seriously just pisses me off. Rob was proving himself as a guy who was developing our young talent. We got all these guys who fit the defense he wants to play. Now what? We start mix matching the talent around and think we can switch to a 4-3 over night? This is ridiculous.

Only silver lining is perhaps we'll force a few more turnovers. We've been horrifically bad at generating them when we have the tools to be very good at it.

You don't watch the Cowboys much do you?

Rob ran much more 4-3 at the end of the season then you think...infact I think I read he ran more 4-3 than he did 3-4.

There's probably more evidence that a 4-3 would put our best players in a position to make plays. No more dropping Ware back in coverage(or having to choose between RG3 or Morris, and failing), him and Spencer strictly blitzing. Lissemore/Hatcher/(drafted DL)/Rat(who people want to play DE anyways) no longer having to be a space eating NT. Lee/Carter/Sims(whoever) in coverage or blitzing.

Take your blinders off, and stop the man love

I'm reading that Garrett fired Rob over the phone while he was on vacation.

Classy guy.

More concern with taking someone like Lovie is the complete waste both Carr and Claiborne would be in off-man. We need someone to utilize press-man as that best suits the two lynchpins of the secondary.

If would put money on Horton being the guy. He was who Garrett wanted originally and is available now that 'Zona is starting over. Personality it's a smart match and he's was lauded as an up-and-comer last time around and now has proven he can manage a defense in the desert.

Rumor mill is the worst way to hear about it. If the talks with Horton were about to heat up someone would of leaked it and that would be worse than making a phone call now.

Why would you throw out an insult like that?

It's not about what he ran. It's about what we've been trying to build for. We've been building this 3-4 defense since what..2005, 2006??? Now we just flip the switch? It'll be interesting who our next DC is. Our injuries totally caused our adjustment changes, but Rob is a 3-4 guy, who made adjustments to the personnel. The change is probably not as bad as I'm ranting on about but I'm PISSED OFF.

Yea, I'm not as in love with Lovie...but from everything I've read about Horton(and the fact that JG initially wanted him). I think that's the move they're making.

Yea the insult wasn't necessary....

I'm just not that upset about the firing. He's an average DC, people just loved him cursing and his playcharts with naked women...Forgetting about him constantly rushing 3, having 12 men on the field(or 9), or the defense NEVER getting turnovers.

He did a hell of a job with the injuries, but alas....Boys can do better(they can also do worst...admittedly).

I liked Rob. From a statistical perspective he was middle of the road, but considering what he inherited the first year and massive injuries the second year he did a good job. The only reason why I'm not so up in arms about it is because he can be improved. Even then it's like the blame is going the wrong way here. Without Rob's work with this patchwork D this year they're probably 5-11 instead of 8-8.

Whoever comes in as a 4-3 or 3-4 is fine by me. Ware is your best player that's better in a 3-4, but I can see him being great in a 4-3 since he was a DE in college. It could be a better transition if Spencer isn't resigned. We'll see how it goes, but I surely hope that something is done about the horrible play calls on offense as well.

In theory a 4-3 fits us just fine.

Ware and Spencer as Ends (Doesn't make them go into coverage)

Spears/Hatcher/Lissemore/Ratliff as DTs (Solves need for a DT mainly)

LBS would be Lee, Carter and _____, maybe even Albright the way the staff loved him late.

DBS would remain the same.

We would need more line depth and some LB depth. But it would help solve the issue of having an extremely undersized Nose. Free Ware and Spencer to do what they do best and rush the passer, keep Lee and Carter cleaner to make plays.

The fact he fired him over the phone is classless. The fact that he didn't do a bad job is confusing. Its just strange that the defense wasn't why we lost and that is evident to anyone that watched the games. Our offense couldnt establish a ground game because we didn't try to run the ball enough.... Romo is a good QB but shouldn't make 50 throws in multiple games EVER.

ware and spencer can play 4-3 just fine, they actually have less responsibilty in 4-3 than in 3-4, but if spencer doesnt come back in they do move to 4-3 crawford played the LDE in college

You can argue that this defense didn't blitz enough, but is that characteristic of what Rob has always done? Certainly not. It was an obvious adjustment to his ideals. Playing with street scrubs can have that effect.

Should coaching movement be treated the same as player movement? If there's an upgrade out there, then just go out and get one? All the time invested in trying to implement a system, just tossed out. Wonderful. 1 step forward, 3 steps back.

Under Rob Ryan, Cowboys allowed 5,687 yards. Most in their history

Not real happy with the move but we werent dominate in his 2 years either

How about this guy as a replacement?

Kirby Smart, the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2009 Broyles Award winner as college football's top assistant coach, is in his sixth season with the Alabama football staff and fifth as defensive coordinator. A former standout defensive back and scholar-athlete at Georgia, Smart brings an impressive blend of college and pro coaching experience to the Crimson Tide.

The lack of turnovers is why I am not worked up about this at all. His defense was also usually pretty bad when the team had the lead or needed a stop.

To me he's a middle of the road guy with an oversized personality. I'd love to see Horton here, and while I don't think it was all Ryan's fault, it can't get much worse here on defense.

We need to get Ray Horton if we want to save face. I am really puzzled by this unless that's the solution.

Much like when you say people make excuses for Romo. Rob's had 2 years here and the defense got WORST not better...You can blame injuries...but last year we were saying "Rob can't blitz because the CB's can't cover"...now "Rob can't blitz because of street scrubs".

Redskins showed us(along with a # of other teams) that you don't need a great Secondary to blitz the hell out of people. Jets consistently dial up pressure at key moments despite not being even close to the Cowboys talent wise(besides Revis...who was IR).

Rob's average man...just average. I have no problem with the change if JG is going after the guy he initially had eyes on before hiring RR. Let's just see who's brought in here before we get all up in arms.

Again..I like Ryan, quite a bit....Dude brought an intensity to the Defense that Wade absolutely lacked. JG is so reserved and guarded that Ryan was a great counter balance to that as well.

I'm not trying to downplay his work in Dallas....I'm just not so upset with the move.

This is gonna be a long offseason.

We're crediting/blaming the stats on the coaches instead of the personnel on the field.

Jason Garrett has released a statement regarding the firing of Rob Ryan:

"I want to express my appreciation to Rob for all of his efforts and contributions to the Cowboys over the past two years. At this time, the decision has been made to move forward in a different direction philosophically on defense. I have an immense amount of respect for Rob as a person and as a football coach and I wish him and his family the very best."

Ryan's defense gave up the most yards in team history this season as opponents averaged 355.4 yards per game. The Cowboys allowed an average of 22.4 points per game. They had 34 sacks, seven interceptions and nine forced fumbles.

If thats your argument then what is your argument in Jason Garrett remaining as the OC/HC?

He was all hat and no cattle. I think it was a bad hire from day one. When the best you can say about him is he did pretty well when injuries hit, it's time to move on.
