WCW died because of the Time-Warner-Turner merger. Vince Russo contributed, but the ultimate death was because Ted Turner no longer had any form of control, and entertainment industry people who knew nothing about wrestling came in and cared about nothing more than the bottom line. They told WCW that they had a new target audience, and that they had to start marketing their product towards kids, and not the demographic that put them on the map. It was complete mismanagement on every level, and mostly because people who didn't care about wrestling were put into a position in which they had control over the product. Eric Bischoff had a huge deal in place that would have sold a lot of the WCW programming to the Asian market, but Time Warner wouldn't sign off on it because it was with one of their competitive media companies over there. That money would have put WCW in the black for that year, but instead, they finished in the red, and that started the unloading process. They wanted scripts three weeks in advance.

But Russo really ****** a lot of things up. When Bischoff came back, there was one PPV in which Hogan was supposed to get a cheap win over Jeff Jarrett, and then get mad about it and walk out on the company. There was to be a new WCW title tournament, and when the finals rolled around, Hogan was supposed to come back and say no way, this is the belt, you gotta go through me. So everything went down the way it was supposed to, and Eric chased Hogan out of the building begging him to come back. The PPV was supposed to be over, so Bishoff and Hogan took off. About a half hour later they started getting phone calls only to find out Russo went out on his own after they left and said that Hogan was a POS and would never work for the company again and there would be a title match right now and Booker T beat Jarret to win his first title. That caused Hogan to sue and all sorts of other crap.

People want to blame Eric Bischoff for ruining WCW, but the reality is that if it weren't for Bischoff, there wouldn't have been a WCW. He changed them from a company that constantly lost money into a multi-million dollar outfit that spent about three years as the top dog in the industry. If it weren't for the Time Warner/Turner merger, I think WCW would have lived a much different life...

I thought one of the plans was for Bischoff to buy WCW?

Another problem with WCW was that it didn't really create any new stars that weren't already established by WWF, NWA, or ECW.

Yeah the Power Plant was a joke at developing stars. All it did was create bodybuilders who were stiff and weak on the mic

I wish they would've pushed Sean O'Haire's "I'm not telling you anything you don't already know" character..

He had the money worked out with partners, but Time Warner used him to drive up the price and sell to the WWE. Bishoff made a ******** off his stock in Turner, because he got to a point where he was forced to sell his stock or lose it, and at the time they were all worth upwards of $150 a share. Top that off with the salary he was making, Bishoff is sitting on millions.

But he also had two other partners that put the bid together to buy WCW, and they were convinced that they had it. Time Warner just gave him the run-around and after declining his first offer, came back to him and asked if he could make it come back just before they sold to Vince McMahon, obviously so they could say "hey, we're about to sell to Eric Bischoff" and not be bluffing if he backed off...

I miss WCW. The nWo's prime days were my favorite period in wrestling, ever. I need to find some old Nitro tapes or something...

Well, acctually Goldberg was a damn good athlete, but you're right about the mic skills.

My biggest problem with Goldberg was that he was pushed to the top without "paying his dues".

Ask Bret Hart if he wasn't a stiff worker? And yes you right about his push being unwarranted.

Yeah, he injured Bret with that kick, but it happend because of his inexperience, not lack of athletic ability.

Stiff Bodybuilder = Inexperience in the ring, kind of obvious. All the previous posts are coming full circle.

So, Goldberg wasn't a star? He was probably the most over wrestler with fans in history after Hogan, Austin and probably The Rock. Did he pay his dues, did he have mic skills? No, but that's not my point. The Power Plant "developed" one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling in Bill Goldberg. He was a lot better worker than he gets credit for, too. Love him or hate him, don't tell me you didn't mark out when he beat Hogan for the title on Nitro.

By the way, John Cena didn't exactly pay his dues. He's been forced down the throats of fans every bit as much as Goldberg; the only difference being Goldberg was a hell of a lot more popular with fans.

John Cena put in a lot of hard work in OVW as the Prototype

Wow are you ready to be proven wrong? If not then don't read this:

First of all the post you quoted from SuperKevin was a sentiment that I share as well, Goldberg was a stiff bodybuilder type, and had no mic skills. And before you start grumbling, saying "You're Next!" is not equivalent to great mic skills.

Secondly, the same reason you're bashing John Cena for being "forced down the throats of fans" is the same exact reason Goldberg got over.

And lastly, you are totally wrong in your assumption that John Cena never paid his dues. He actually came up in the wrestling industry from childhood, his father his heavily involved with local territories in the New England area not to mention that Cena was in developmental territories for years wrestling as The Prototype in UPW and OVW notably. Cena paid his dues and gives back to the industry, unlike your boy Goldberg.

So new rule, NBA: Unless you have a root canal at halftime, SHUT UP AND PLAY!
