Because you've probably only heard her radio stuff which isn't a great indicator of her as an artist or any artist for that matter. She's not great by any standards, but her albums consistently have some damn good songs on them when she's doing her slow stuff. It's where she shines. "Tomorrow" (Let Go) [my favorite Lavigne song], "Slipped Away" (Under My Skin), & "When You're Gone" (The Best Damn Thing) are ALL excellent examples of such.
Anyhow, that was me picking out songs.. here was my iTunes on shuffle:
1. Sarah McLachlan - "Mary"
2. Alicia Keys - "Rock Wit U"
3. Sarah McLachlan - "Wait" (absolutely LOVE this song)
4. Bobby Valentino - "Rearview (Ridin') (Feat. Ludacris)"
5. Twista - "Overnight Celebrity (Feat. Kanye West & Miri Ben-Ari)"
6. Mandy Moore - "Can't You Just Adore Her" (one of my favorite songs off her latest album)
7. Kelly Clarkson - "A Moment Like This" (song that started it all)
8. Jay-Z - "Hard Knock Life (The Ghetto Anthem)"
9. R. Kelly - "Trapped In The Closet Chapter 4" (I love this song for complete comedy purposes)
10. John Legend - "So High" (my favorite John Legend song)

I'll agree with that, great was the wrong word. "Far Away" is awesome, so is "Next Contestant" and "If Everyone Cared".
