If any school (and I mean any school in the country) could get Matta right now, it's Kentucky.
I don't disagree, but it's hard for most coaches to walk away from excellent situations, and right now, Ohio State is an excellent situation if all their committments stay in the next 2 years. Was perusing the Kentucky boards and supposedly Matta made some unflattering comments about Kentucky ... if that makes any difference.

Personally, I still think Kentucky is better off going with someone like Pelphrey/Ford, someone that will stay there long term and has strong ties to the university. If Donovan goes, I think it's a pit stop until he feels ready for the NBA, and I do think Donovan heads to the NBA someday.

I am with you, toon. I really believe Kentucky dropped the ball here by not having a coach ready to replace Tubby Smith if he left. There are plenty of guys out there who would want the job. The AD there really messed up.

Of the 2 guys you suggested, Pelphrey is the better option IMO. What did Ford really do since leaving? Not much yet. He can recruit, but his in-game coaching skills are still developing. He's probably 2 years away from being ready. Pelphrey has a more advanced game-calling approach, IMO.

it is a thought. i know the kentucky rivals message board had some post showing how a flight from Lexington headed towards Memphis for a bit, or something like that.

To be honest, I've always wondered if Calipari would make a play for the NBA again. People tend to forget that he's not even 50 yet.

That said, if there's a school that can pry him away from a national title contender and increased leverage, it'd be Kentucky.
Bill Self had the same situation before he bolted for KU. A talented group coming back and he decided to leave. Cal knows he has a very talented team for next year, but he also knows that going to Florida is a step up from where he's at. And in the end, coaches do what's best for them, not necessarily what's best for the team.

Same can be said about Durant staying or Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert if they returned they no doubt would be champions, no seniors a final 4 team a year better and McDonalds all americans Austin Freeman and Chris Wright paired with the growth of Macklin and Ewing.

right now in the college basketball world OSU>Kentucky. Matta wont leave the situation he is in. His dream job was Indiana (home state) and he turned it down to stay with OSU. The recruits he has coming in to pair with this great freshmen class are rediculous. Kentucky isnt a power like they use to be, the days are over for them being able to recruit any coach/player they want. There still very good, but they dont have what they use to.

Obviously you haven't watched much of Ewing at Gtown, sure he only averaged 3ppg and 2 rpg but he is a big energy defensive guy and can hit the open outside shot, Ewing was the perfect compliment for Hibbert, because when Hibbert was out Ewing would get a couple blocks and foul hard.

At the time right now:

UF>>>>>>>>UK....But you see Billy D looking to go there. UK can outbid OSU for Matta if they really wanted to. Because the Wildcats are historically one of the best teams that's ever been. And to be apart of that tradition would be incredible for a coach. Plus the University would be easy to sell to recruits.

Haha! Dana Altman just backed out of the Arkansas job, and now Arkansas has no coach.

I actually feel bad for Arkansas... Their fans are pretty laid back and I was glad to see he signed with them.

I've been hearing Billy D will be given 72 hours to make his decision. If not him, IMO, Rick Barnes of Texas will be the new head coach at UK. I'm kind of iffy on it. He's like Tubby only the complete opposite. He can recruit insanely well but isn't that great of an in game coach. I'd still rather have talent out there.

Also if Osama was going for the UK job our fans would find them. We have people in so many different fields... One of them is in air travel and he's been tracking private jets linked to UK boosters that have been going to Gainesville and back, they even have the call numbers on the tail wing lol. People that know realitors also said Donovans wife was in Lexington area last week and viewed two houses, I don't really believe that one though.

Their AD deserves to get screwed like this. Firing Heath was completely idiotic and stupid. Karma's a b*tch isn't it Broyles?

Yeah... Especially that they did so without a real backup plan. It's one thing to fire a guy but another to not have a practical backup lined up and ready to sign.

Forget what I said before about Tyler Smith, for anyone who cares he is going to remain at Iowa for atleast one more year, atleast thats what it sounds like in his interviews.

Thank you god!

This is not suprising at all. Kentucky has an idea that they can hire anyone, that's simply not the case. I never bought Donovan, Izzo, or Matta as serious contendors.

I'd go after Gillespie, but it appears Rick Barnes is their plan B.

Gillespie is a much better coach than Barnes. They could also stand to take a run at Mark Few.

Bob Huggins leaving K-state to coach at West Va. Wonder if they let Michael Beasley open his recruitment back up. If they let Beasley change where hes going I bet he goes to USC if he doesnt goto West Va of course.

Mayo and Beasley would be a killer tandem

Things took a huge change today.

In what little reading I've done since I've got home it looks like either Billy Gillespie or Mike D'antoni (Suns coach). Gillespie is short and sweet to sign.

As dumb as the D'antoni rumor sounds it actually may have some legs. I laughed at it when I first heard it but one of our respected announcers (who never said anything either way about Donovan) has said that D'antoni has contacted our AD about the job. Supposedly his wife wants to move closer to WV (where their families are) and maybe he wants to slow down. I don't know, I'm really still not buying the D'antoni rumors (plus the guy has never coached college, granted a former NBA coach running a wide open offense should get recruits).

I'm hoping before the weekend is over that Billy Gillespie is the new coach.

Barnes is out already.

The Donovan thing shouldn't have been a surprise. It was a message board driven idea that he was signed, sealed, and delivered, but it never made sense to me. This wasn't Roy Williams going "home". Kentucky was just a pitstop ... and while it might've been a "dream" job once upon a time, he had a much better gig. While Florida probably won't win it all next year, there's a good chance that, come 2008-2009, if his players have developed, he'll be in position to legitimately push again. They should be the favorites for Patrick Patterson, completing a deep class, and if for some reason Jai Lucas decides to go there, per the current talk of Jai adding Florida, they'd be ridiculously deep.

Much as Kentucky fans (and speaking more towards that rivals board and not anyone here) want to believe that they can get whomever they want, the realities of it was that, at this time, this was a historic program, but not an elite program. It reminds me of Alabama football when Franchione left for the Aggies. It has the chance of getting back to elite, but expecting an elite hire like Donovan right now ... it just didn't seem legit.

I don't buy the D'Antoni rumors either. Does he have any experience as a recruiter on that level? He'd need a ridiculously talented staff to bridge his shortcomings in the collegiate arena.

Gillespie I can somewhat see, so that may be legitimate. But I still have my questions about that (Gillespie's a Texas kid ... adding a nice class, and while they did lose the Law ... they still have a solid club coming back, a better club than Kentucky). IMO, Very rarily do you see coaches bolt for a worse situation unless there's a personal tie (say Gary Williams coming "home" to Maryland back in the day).

Personally, I think they should look to Pelphrey or Ford. Those are guys that would fight tooth and nail for the program and give the effort needed. IMO, forget Calipari. 1, I don't think Calipari moves anyways (better situation at Memphis right now). 2, Calipari, IMO, is akin to Saban in that, if a great situation came along, offering more pay, I can still see him bolting, Kentucky or not.

The only other guy I think they should pursue is Izzo, if there's any legs to that (and I still somewhat doubt those legs ... ).

Should be interesting to see how it plays out, but I still have significant doubts that anything will be done soon.

Toonster, I'm sorry I just don't think Ford will leave UMASS right now...maybe 2 years. 2 more 18+ win seasons which is in reach will allow him for greater job's. But right now, he is loving it there, and what he did with Lasme and Freeman with HIS recruits as AWESOME. I think they will contend now with more of a run and gun, smaller team...esp in the A-10.
