I definitely think that's what it is. The Falcons couldn't cover at all and were even worse getting to the passer. I see a big issue coming this year, even when Gronk is back. Brady is playing bad, not bad for Brady but bad. Hopefully Gronk can give him back some confidence but I don't see him flipping a switch that gives him his accuracy back.

In saying that the Saints game will be really interesting. Our defense against their offense should be a really good watch, and if Gronk does play I think he can exploit their LBs and Vaccaro's aggressiveness. If we can slow their pass rush then Brady will have time, but it will all come down to whether or not he can make them pay. All in all though I think the Saints win by 2 scores

I honestly don't understand the fascination for trading for Josh Gordon. The issues the Patriots are having on offense is mainly the fact that the rookie WRs don't have a grasp of the offense and aren't on the same page with Brady. I don't see how replacing them with another WR who doesn't understand the offense and isn't on the same page with Brady will help things.

Belichick needs to stand pat and see this youth experiment at least until the end of this season.

How much of it really is them not understanding the offense at this point? Aside from one or two throws, you can mostly put their issues on drops, not generating enough separation, and not fighting for the football in contested situations. No doubt that the scheme is part of what's at play here, but at the end of the day talent is talent. Gordon is in another stratosphere than anything we have on the roster right now. He has a real chance to develop into a star receiver in this league. It wouldn't surprise me if Thompkins, Boyce, or Dobson was out of football in three years.

...and we can't afford to multiple years waiting for receivers to come along anymore. Our previous ineptitude with developing players at that position has really put us is a spot where an acquisition makes sense.

Think about that Thompkins play that got overturned on Sunday. That's the exact kind of play that has been plaguing the Pats all season this year. A difficult catch that ultimately ends up incomplete because our receivers simply cannot come up with tough catches. Yeah we've had some drops, but we had a ton of drops last year (we led the league on a per pass clip), but guys like Welker and Gronk could make difficult plays on a fairly consistent basis. Thompkins, Edelman, and Dobson haven't been able to, and all came up short when they had their chance to on Sunday.

We're rarely going to get a combination of perfect communication, a perfect throw, and a lot of separation from defenders. Those things aren't going to happen in unison, and even when they do they're not going to happen frequently enough to complete the 65% of our passes we need to in order to have an effective offense.

Gordon isn't a magic bullet, and he certainly has his own issues, but he will get more separation, and I do feel more comfortable in his ability to make his own plays. His contract is what I really like about him anyways.

Actually, I think Gordon is a magic bullet.

I'm not going to go that far, but the more I see of him the more I like him. Had previously pegged him as more of a deep ball specialist after a few games I saw last year...but he's a complete receiver. He's really pretty good with the ball in his hands as well. Considering our offensive woes are just as much about YAC as they are about contested catches down the field, I think it's a good fit. We're simply not going to find a player with the ability to help us as much at that spot in the draft.

Unfortunately, the drug stuff is very scary at this point. I could care less about a guy smoking pot, but smoking and getting caught during the season is another thing entirely.

If the Patriots draft Lyerla after the Hernandez fiasco this past summer the media is going to explode and be in a frenzy over it. I think it's safe to say he's got more red flags than Hernandez had coming out, unlike Hernandez he couldn't even finish his season there, became insubordinate and spoke out against his HC to the media (that alone would piss Belichick off). As an enticing a talent as he is I can't see the Patriots rolling the dice on him and taking him in the draft. The attention they would get following the Hernandez situation wouldn't be worth it.

I didn't even realize that he said some of the things he did about Sandy Hook. That honestly makes him almost untouchable for me. There's a real pattern developing that the guy is a total an absolute prick. He would be a huge get for what we like to do on the field, but I have a real problem with anyone who makes the kind of comments he did. I'm sure there's tons of dumb ************* with ****** opinions in the NFL, but keep that stuff to yourself.

Yeah the Sandy Hook stuff completely changed what I thought of him, I mean in my opinion you have to be messed up to buy into that. And on top of that his apology wasn't really an apology, like I got the sense that he still believed in what he posted and wasn't sorry. I think he's a lot more immature than Hernandez was coming out and more unstable.

I am not sure what other type of issues that Lyerla has but I don't think it is worse than Hernandez.

What he said about Sandy Hook is completely ridiculous and insensitive, however if the guy is a moron who has some drug issues but Hernandez had questions about his mental stability and his associates going back to Florida. The Pats took the chance that they could help him distance himself from those people but it was relatively well known that Hernandez was a gangbanger, at least at one stage.

Lyerla is a headcase who quit on his team. Worst case for Lyerla is he flames out of the league in 3 years. Worst case with Hernandez was he gets a $50m contract and then kills someone

Fairly obvious, but I'm absolutely terrified of Jimmy Graham and Darren Sproles against our defense. As much as they've improved covering receivers, we still have massive issues with tight ends and backs in the passing game. With the exception of Gronk(who sounds like he's playing), Graham is easily the most dangerous tight end in the league. Sproles is absolutely deadly in the passing game. If I'm the Saints, I'm throwing to him all game.

I wonder how long we'll be able to cover Graham like we covered Gonzalez at the end of the Falcons game, or if they'll do that against Graham in this game. That was ridiculous, Gonzalez had like three guys fighting him every time the ball was snapped.

I don't know why but I'm not as concerned about Sproles. I think BB is too good a schemer and defensive mind to let someone like Sproles terrorize the Pats like he did against the Dolphins. I'm confident guys will be in the right position to make plays against him and hopefully they'll be able to tackle or bring him down.

I certainly hope so. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see an extra defensive back in to deal with him. Mayo might be able to keep him from going off on any given play(although he would most certainly be beat once or twice if left alone with him all game), but Spikes or Hightower in space or down the field with him is certainly a match up waiting to be exploited. Hightower in particular has been beaten badly by backs in the passing game this year. Quarterbacks have bailed him out with overthrows a few times, but Brees tends to take advantage of those sorts of match ups.

...not that we're completely safe with Logan Ryan or McCourty on him either. We simply don't have the personnel to match up with Sproles or Graham. I'm not sure anyone does, but it's a particular problem for our defense.

I think we may see a lot of 34 this game to counteract the lack of depth at DT but also to get more athletes on the field.

As for Graham I think we will see something similar to what they did with Gonzalez until the Saints can prove they can run the ball on us. I expect a combination of Hightower or Ninkovich with a DB jam him at the line, however he is more able to line up anywhere on the formation than Gonzalez.

Sproles is the guy who worries me. I don't think he will have a massive stat line but his ability to convert on 3rd and medium to long could be a killer.

Ultimately it will be about getting to Brees and trying to force some mistakes. Regardless with how good we have been defensively this year we will not stop Drew Brees moving the ball on us

I'm usually the optimist. This week I see no real chance for a win. I agree it will likely be a two score loss and am leaning more towards a minimum 2 TD loss. 35 - 17 is my guess.

Yeah this is going to be really ugly, no matter how well our defense has played, were not ready for this with our offense struggling this badly. I don't think Gronk magically fixes things either.

Agree with others here, we'll lose and probably by at least two scores.

Albert Breer was on local radio today and said something about how he expects Gronkowski to end up on IR by the end of the year. Hopefully things are improving, hut his injury history was concerning coming into the year and rapidly starting to become an even bigger concern. Tight end is rapidly becoming a big time need for this time come draft day. Not just to create the formation flexibility we had with Hernandez either. We may not be able to count on Gronk's body holding up going forward.

It's worth noting that Tom Gill left the Red Sox a few high profile cases of players challenging him. Who knows how much of that you can put on the notably complacent and spoiled Red Sox teams of a few years ago, but there's a bit of a track record here.

I ******* hate everything about this season.

To clarify, I can't even enjoy the improvements our defense has made due to the fact its all going in the shitter now because our offense can't even pick up more than one first down a drive.

I agree we need to address TE come draft day. I disagree that Gronk's health is a long term concern. It seems like Gronk and the Patriots made a bad decision when he/they opted for a plate in his arm so he could return faster. The issue now appears to be concern for the bone in his arm as a direct result of the plate and resulting infection. While there has to be some concern that the bone may be weakened permanently, I think that is the only long term health concern. If the bone is fine, I don't see him as an "injury prone" player.

Most of the ESPN experts picked the Saints. The only ones to pick the Pats was ESPN Insider's Number Fire (not quite sure what that is, it's probably like a computer generated score) and Adam Schefter.

Were not winning this game lol.

And I'd be surprised if it were even close.

I certainly hope you're right. It's not so much to forearm(although that fits into a developing trend), but multiple back surgeries for a guy who isn't even 25 yet scare me a bit. I don't think toughness is a question with Gronk though, so at least we have that going for us.

Regardless, it's fairly clear that something didn't go well in this whole situation. I completely understand that we needed him back from the first injury as soon as humanly possible(who know's how that Raven's game goes if he's healthy), but it's just such a shame that whatever went down is still a problem all these months later.
