We need a JMike-esque poster for the Pats board. In all seriousness it really sucks, not only the amount of injuries we have had, but to the type of player that has been hurt.

Really, if you started the year and named 15 players from the Pats roster who would be huge losses, I would say in some shape or form we have lost 7 or 8 for some period of time.

Vince
Mayo
Gronk
Kelly
Solder
Vereen
Talib
Vollmer

This is why I love what we have been able to do this year, but it is incredibly frustrating thinking that even with Welker leaving and Hernandez getting cut this may have been the best team we put out on paper since 2007.

The defense finally looked like it could be good and if the offense could hold until Gronk came back then we would be in great shape. Then all kind of **** happened and we are where we are. No point in crying about it but it just sucks

My brother is a huge Cowboys homer and tried to tell me they are missing just as many starters as NE.

Anywho . . . tough one to lose. It's really clear that we need someone to fill the red zone shoes vacated by Gronk. Even getting Dobson back would help a ton but his injury is too hush-hush for us to have any clue if/when he might return.

Ridley's fumbles, Gronk's and Vollmer's injuries, and Hernandez's murders really put a damper on what should have been a young offense with a ton of potential.

Coupled with a defense coming together for the first time in years. All of it, gone.

With the 125th overall pick in the forum mock, the Patriots drafted Oklahoma fullback Trey Millard. I like Millard as a rushing threat who also gives good effort as a blocker, can line up in various different spots (running back, fullback, H-Back), and has soft hands out of the backfield. Based on interviews, he also seems to have the intelligence that the Patriots look for in their players. While Millard may miss the beginning of the season while recovering from ACL surgery, that may allow the team to stash him on the practice squad, starting James Develin at fullback until Millard is fully recovered, allowing the rookie some time to learn the playbook. New England will be on the clock again after Cleveland and Seattle make their picks.

Damn Matthew you are making this too realistic :(

Can you not just pretend that Belichick has gone balls deep and traded the entire draft and Dont'a Hightower (just for Cmarq) so they could somehow get up to both #3 and #5 and taken Jadeveon Clowney and Sammy Watkins. Go on, it makes sooooo much sense

With the 137th overall pick in the draft, the Patriots selected Notre Dame offensive guard Chris Watt. Watt, the #2 offensive guard in his recruiting class, started at left guard for the Irish over the past three seasons. At 6'3" and 321 pounds, he possesses a thick build, strong initial punch, and aggressive on-field temperament, with sound awareness in pass protection/blitz pickup. After releasing right guard Dan Connolly, the Patriots were left with three offensive guards on the active roster: Logan Mankins, Marcus Cannon, and Josh Kline. After 2014, releasing Mankins would save $7 million, while Marcus Cannon is set to become a free agent, so drafting someone to groom as a potential starter seemed like a wise investment at this point. The fact that Watt also spent two seasons playing alongside fellow Patriots line reserve Braxston Cave was another factor I considered. New England has Philadelphia's sixth-round pick and their own seventh-round pick remaining.

I already mentioned to you that I have zero functional knowledge of the draft class, so take this with a grain of salt.

Would CB that early be wise, considering the FA pool looks like it could be pretty deep at CB again in 2014?

That pick was a case of drafting the best player available. I had Roby ranked as a top-ten pick heading into the season, and while his uneven play has caused his stock to slip, I'm still among those who thinks that he deserves to go in the first round. At this point, he gives up a little too much separation on breaks and is susceptible to double-moves in man coverage, but has excellent speed, elite closing burst, effective ball skills, and a physical on-field temperament which allows him to take on blocks well and tackle successfully in the run game, prompting some to consider him a possible candidate for conversion to safety if cornerback doesn't work out. As a prospect, I'd rank him a little below someone like Desmond Trufant, but above say, Chris Houston.

Makes sense. Still, with Wendell / Connelly looking pretty consistently over matched, I'd hope to see a real draft that targets the Oline early.

I would have liked to do what you suggested because I agree that Wendell and Connolly have been playing at an unacceptable level this season, but this draft just isn't conducive to addressing guard or center. Looking at where people are projected to go, New England would basically have to forfeit the opportunity to draft a quality receiving option, defensive tackle, or cornerback in order to secure basically an average interior lineman who was able to capitalize on an absence of talent at the position. "Addressing" a need by drafting a Patrick Chung is ultimately less beneficial than finding quality players regardless of whether or not you have other options there.

Agreed. I haven't looked at the OL FA crop. Maybe there will be something there for 2014.

Solder and Boyrce both absent from practice, believed we'll shift Mankins over again to accommodate. Good lord I swear the injury bug with us this year. Its ridiculous. We better have one hell of a draft.

I really don't want to see Mankins over at LT again.
What happened to Svitek? Couldn't he and Cannon address the starting tackles?

The New England Patriots traded picks #184 and #221 to acquire pick #172 from the St. Louis Rams; the Patriots used the pick to select Michigan St. linebacker Max Bullough. A three-year starter at middle linebacker for the Spartans, Bullough has been named an All-Big Ten First Team selection in each of the past two years, a team captain in each of the past two years, and an Academic All-Big Ten nominee in both years as well (second team in 2012, first team in 2013.) The 6'3", 245-pound Bullough is a rangy player with unanticipated speed, but who plays with a physical demeanor and can take on blocks in the run game. By drafting Bullough, New England has made all of their selections in the forum mock. Here's how it turned out:

2.39. CB Bradley Roby, Ohio St.*

2.60. DL Dominique Easley, Florida

3.70. WR Brandon Coleman, Rutgers*

3.75. DT DaQuan Jones, Penn St.

4.125. FB Trey Millard, Oklahoma

5.137. OG Chris Watt, Notre Dame

6.172. LB Max Bullough, Michigan St.

New England also traded their original sixth-round pick to Houston for LB Brooks Reed.

At the moment, after the free agent period and the draft, this is how New England's 53-man roster stands, although given the Patriots' tradition of including one undrafted free agent on the final roster, that's something I'll investigate once the other teams finish making their selections. I know I'll probably take some criticism on here for some of the players I decided to part ways with (Ridley, Edelman, Spikes, Talib), but I think it was a successful offseason in terms of exercising financial restraint during the initial period, then trying to find younger, cheaper replacements in the draft while also addressing some of the weaknesses which became visible during the 2013 season. The two post-draft free-agent signings are players who I thought would fit well into the offense and would sign team-friendly one-year contracts.

"In four comeback wins this season, the Pats were outscored 64-10 in the first half – a true picture of how bad they should be. But in those four second halves, Brady and Co. outscored opponents 112-41"
per espnboston.

Am I the only one who is almost certain we're going to lose this week? Baltimore has a great defense, including being very effective on third down and in the red zone, they typically play us well, and are significantly better at home than on the road. Scariest projected matchups: Torrey Smith vs. Kyle Arrington/Marquice Cole on offense (assuming we treat Smith the same way we did Wallace last week), Haloti Ngata vs. Ryan Wendell on defense.

No, you're not. I don't really expect it to be that close.

I don't want to come off as pessimistic because as mediocre as the Pats have been, mediocre Pats are still a really good team... But the only way the Pats win this game is if Baltimore decides to not run the ball. And I think that's actually a 50/50 possibility.

The Ravens aren't the Ravens we're used to. That defense is kind of messy and Flacco is still a one-trick pony. The one thing they have that can really just decimate the Pats is a power running game. The Pats simply do not have an answer to that. The Pats have to start out quick (get the ball first, score, get the ball back and score again before the Ravens put points on the board), they can take the run away from the Ravens. That's their winning strategy.

The ravens can't run the ball this year though. Honestly I see a really boring close game that the ravens win late because the Pats won't score a TD when they need and then the defense can't get a stop and Tucker scores the game winner
